Saudade
I guess the biggest challenge of an immigrant is to leave behind his past not what he encounters in the new life. The word saudade which means missing or longing for something is a very special word in Portuguese. Immigrants miss everything. They miss the food, family, old neighborhoods, friends and the house where they grew up.
Unfortunately most immigrants are undocumented and therefore they cannot live this country. When their permission to stay legally in this country has expired, if they leave they will not be allowed to come back.
Every year I go back to Brazil to see friends and family and enjoy the town of Ipanema where I grew up. It is amazing how we miss little things that we never cared for when we thought that we would live forever in the same town. Things like going to the bakery and buying fresh rolls, enjoying coconut water at the beach, going for a bike ride, walking in the cities downtown streets and riding the bus.
Now, while placing the photo of Rio taken from the top of Corcovado, I can’t stop thinking how this Marvelous city look like a post card. The beauty of Rio is not only the nature. It is also the people and their relaxed nature. Sitting at a coffee shop in Rio and starting an informal bate papo (chat) with the person next to you is common. It makes you never feel alone even in a big city. Rio is also a city of contrasts where the poor and rich share the same area, not always very harmoniously.
I hope Americans can see this relaxed and friendly nature brought by Brazilian immigrants in this country too.

Saudade
Eu acho que um dos maiores desafios do imigrante não é o que ele encontra no novo país e sim, deixar para trás seu passado. O imigrante sente saudade de tudo. Da comida, da família, da antiga vizinhança, dos amigos e da casa onde ele cresceu.
Infelizmente grande parte dos imigrantes, por não possuírem documentos, não podem deixar os EUA e visitar seu país de origem.
Todos os anos eu retorno ou Brasil para ver amigos e parentes e curtir o bairro de Ipanema onde eu cresci. É incrível ver como a gente sente saudade de pequenas coisas para as quais nunca demos importância quando achávamos que viveríamos para sempre na mesma cidade. Coisas como ir até a padaria comprar um pão francês, tomar água de coco na praia, passear de bicicleta, andar pelas ruas do centro da cidade e pegar um ônibus.
Ao ver a foto do Rio tirada do alto do Corcovado, não consigo deixar de pensar no quanto esta Cidade Maravilhosa parece um cartão postal. A beleza do Rio não está somente na sua natureza, mas também no seu povo e no seu jeito descontraído de ser. Sentar um café e bater um papo informal com o estranho da mesa ao lado é super comum. Isso faz com que a gente nunca se sinta sozinho nesta cidade grande.
Eu gostaria que os americanos apreciassem o jeito descontraído e amigo que o brasileiro trouxe para esse país.
